"Dare to share" with European Scouts

Launch of ADAE Campaign in Italy was preceded by episodes of exclusion of lgbt issues. But something changed in the meantime...
Iglyo Board (23/08/2006)

Roverway is an european event which took place in Loppiano-Florence (Italy) this August. It is a meeting opportunity for the young members of the two world Scouting and Guiding associations (WOSM and WAGGGS) and an example of active collaboration between the Associations
The Italian Scout Federation (FIS) was in charge of this event which called about 5000 participants from 47 different countries of Europe and beyond.

IGLYO expresses its concern in reporting that Roverway organization had excluded italian LGBT organizations (Arcigay and Lista Lesbica) from chairing two workshops on sexual orientation, homophobia and gender identity (and it seemed quite unfair as Roverway did invite them, at the beginning).

This fact, as the word spread around the camp, caused a sudden reaction by scout themselves whom wore on their suit a rainbow flag with the logo of the camp claiming "stop homophobia! Roverway 2006". A letter written in many languages by Lista Lesbica Italiana was handed to the participants during the camp and this started many spontaneous discussions about LGBT issues.

Alongide this facts Roverway staff have met with lgbt representatives in order to clarify the situation and explore possible solutions. After two days a joint relese of the Italian Scout Federation (FIS) and Arcigay (Italian LGBT Association) was sent to the press. It is actually the first time a national scout organization engages in a struggle against discrimination together with the LGBT community.

IGLYO was invited at Loppiano for the official launch of the Campaign "All Different, All Equal" in Italy. Fabio Saccà (IGLYO Board Member) has joined a panel of discussion together with Ralf-Rene Weingaertner (Director of Directorate on Youth and Sport, CoE), Giuseppe Porcaro (WOSM and Chair of Advisory Council on Youth, CoE), Georg Boldt (OBESSU), Mariam Yassin (Women From Minorities), Vanessa Migliosi (European Disability Forum). The panel was quite a success and it reaffirmed that the Campaign "All Different, All Equal" wants to be inclusive for all youth and for all minorities.

JOINED RELEASE of FIS and ARCIGAY

Loppiano (Florence), 13th of August 2006

FIS (Scout Italian Federation) and ARCIGAY (National Lesbian and Gay Association) have met during these days in the spirit of "dare to share" (in the European camp ROVERWAY), in order to stress the common intention to engage against discrimination. If we miss someone, with his/her unicity and difference, we're all poorer, if not everyone is equal for right and opportunities we lost a chance to enlarge our horizons and to tear down false boundaries among people.
We committed ourselves to work in a shared ground on homosexuality, respecting specifities of our educational approaches, leading towards a shared struggle against homophobia and healing the scout spirit of openness. Both organization are committed to proceed further meetings after Roverway.

Chiara Sapigni - President of AGESCI (Italian Catholic Guide and Scout Association)
Lorenzo Maggini - Scoutmaster of CNGEI (National Italian Youth Guide)
Fabio Saccà - Youth Coordinator in ARCIGAY (National Lesbian & Gay Organization)
